WASHINGTON - The Open Markets Institute proudly celebrates Food Program Manager Claire Kelloway for being named a finalist in the 2025 James Beard Media Awards.

Kelloway, alongside co-authors Teresa Cotsirilos and Bridget Huber, was recognized in the Columns and Newsletters category for their incisive reporting in the series—“The Farm Bill Hall of Shame,” “The Essential Workers Missing from the Farm Bill,” and “Tribal Nations Want More Control Over Their Food Supply”—which was published by the Food & Environment Reporting Network and Mother Jones. These pieces critically examine the structural inequities and monopolistic forces that shape American agriculture and food.

Kelloway’s contribution highlights some of the most harmful policy choices in past Farm Bills that drove farm consolidation, pushed Black farmers off the land, and transferred federal farm support from the many to the few.

Barry Lynn, Executive Director of the Open Markets Institute, offered his congratulations:

“Claire’s nomination is a testament to her fearless journalism and deep commitment to exposing the corporate power structures that weaken our food system, an important measure of a healthy democracy. Her work brings vital attention to the ways monopolies harm farmers, workers, and consumers alike. We are thrilled to see her efforts recognized by one of the most prestigious institutions in food journalism.”

Kelloway’s reporting builds on her extensive work at Open Markets, where she has led efforts to highlight the dangers of corporate consolidation in agriculture. Her analyses have informed federal actions, including USDA initiatives to address anti-competitive practices in meatpacking and retail markets.

The James Beard Media Awards ceremony will be held on June 14, 2025, at the Columbia College Chicago Student Center.
