Antimonopoly Pioneer Sally Hubbard Rejoins Open Markets as Fellow from DOJ
“I’m excited to work once again with the Open Markets Institute to use competition policy to help shape media and technology to be de-concentrated, resilient, and thriving.” - Sally Hubbard
WASHINGTON, DC - The Open Markets Institute is very pleased to announce the return of Sally Hubbard as a Fellow, made possible through a generous grant from the Knight Foundation Federal Alumni Fellowship Fund at The Miami Foundation. The fellowship will allow Hubbard to develop forward-thinking competition policy proposals and convene experts to address critical issues at the intersection of technology, democracy, and innovation.
The Knight fellowship will broaden the Open Markets Institute’s ability to:
Conduct non-partisan research to inform governance, innovation, and democratic engagement in the tech and media landscapes.
Foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including academics, policymakers, and practitioners, to advance discussions on technology and media policy.
Educate and engage policymakers and the public on issues central to competition, technology, and media policy.
"Given the continuing interference by all-powerful communications corporations over how individuals, communities, and nations communicate and engage in political debate, we need all of the best minds focused on breaking and neutralizing their power,” Open Markets executive director Barry Lynn said. “Sally’s experience as senior counsel to the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice gives her the experience and insight to guide the pro-democracy, pro-free speech agenda forward in the U.S. and around the world at this pivotal moment.”
“Today’s communication systems are ruled by monopolies and oligopolies, giant companies that decide what information is elevated and what information is buried,” said Hubbard. “I’m excited to work once again with the Open Markets Institute to use competition policy to help shape media and technology to be de-concentrated, resilient, and thriving. I am thankful to the Knight Foundation and the Miami Foundation for the opportunity to do this work at such a critical time for our democracy.”
Hubbard’s fellowship is made possible through a grant from the Knight Foundation Federal Alumni Fellowship Fund at The Miami Foundation, supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Knight Foundation’s mission to foster informed and engaged communities aligns with the goals of this fellowship, ensuring that the Open Markets Institute continues its vital work in promoting fair competition and informed policymaking.
